Ok so the title may seem a little dramatic, but seriously, is it not a valid question?
It’s non-negotiable: You will leave a legacy! The question is not whether you’ll leave a legacy but what legacy you will leave?
We all begin life at GO, and all roads lead to a final rendezvous; the difference is what we do en route.
Thinking of what you want your legacy to be is like starting anything new – HARD! I found that closing my eyes and envisioning my future helps breaks down this barrier…….so here we go, let’s try it together, close your eyes and envision the outcome of a successful life. What do you see? What do you hear? Who are you with? How do you feel? This picture may start a bit fuzzy, but stick with it. Contemplation brings clarity, and when the picture is in focus, study what you see – your legacy.
The funny thing is, is that I never used to think so deeply about ‘my legacy’ until maybe 2/3 years ago. I think this may be because I am ageing. The fact that I am getting older, is seriously making me realise that date and time waits for no man. Reality Check Number 1.
Time does not permit dallying with options. Your goals must be clear, responsibilities fulfilled, intentions and actions honourable. You must decide: If not this way, there is no other way. Otherwise, kiss the legacy you envision goodbye. Why is it that we always want to have our cake and eat it too. The reality is you can’t have one foot in the dark and another in the light. It’s impossible! The same goes for leaving the legacy you want, it’s all or nothing. Reality check number 2!
I mean, you can dodge the questions all you want….”Why am I here? What will I leave behind?” But, eventually, we all realise that these questions call for, in fact, demand, answers.
Result: The wonderful part of considering your legacy is the clarity it brings to daily decisions. Each decision moves you closer to or further from your legacy. Your legacy offers advice on how to live in the present in order to be remembered well when you are gone.
So I will conclude by asking these questions; What are you pouring your life into making? When you take your final bow, who will you be? When you report to your master how you invested the talents he gave you, what will you show as a return? Live to answer and honour these questions, because when it comes to your legacy, everything counts!
