“The human face is after all, nothing more nor less than a mask” – Agatha Christie
Why Wear A Mask On Halloween If You Wear One Every Day?
Maybe that’s not a fair question to begin with so let me try to be more politically correct.
What do you gain from wearing a mask? Do you think you wear a mask?
I’m wearing one right now. We both are.
It’s a sad thought. But it’s true.
We aren’t who we want to be.
We are what society demands.
We are what our parents choose.
We don’t want to disappoint anyone.
We have a great need to be loved. So we put on different types of masks. Masks allow us to blend seamlessly into the environment; which I have come to accept is just human nature. The problem however comes when masks become the norm, and we gradually become what we pretend to be. I know this because, this was me. Day in, day out I would put on the beautiful mask of ‘happiness’ when I went to work. I would go out to dinner or lunch with people who have nothing to do with my life and spend the whole time talking about things that are of no importance. It was tiring; physically and mentally. I came to realise I was always tired, despite me having enough sleep the night before, because wearing a mask wears you out. Faking it is fatiguing. The most exhausting activity is pretending to be what you know you aren’t.
It is often said that people change. I beg to differ. People rarely change. Only their masks do. It is only our perception of them and the perception they have of themselves that actually change. So be you! I mean the true you.
Now that you realise that everyone you know is putting up a façade of pretence, it’s time that you determine who you really are. Your façade speaks to whatever it is that you’re trying to hide.
